    is it necessary to use carla for audio plugins? does it have other uses?

    • @LinuxCreative
      @LinuxCreative 5 днів тому

      Carla is not necessary, but it helps a lot with audio and midi routing. There are other, more simplified patch bays if you don't need a plugin and application host, but I find Carla works really well for exactly what it promises to do. You can save Carla sessions and recall them quickly once you have a setup you like with or without plugins.

    lol holy hell Ubuntu 7. My main DAW, Bitwig, runs natively and I got it working on Manjaro because someone had done the work to get it on the repo. Which brings me to I'm kinda tired when a company says Linux native what they mean is debian/ubuntu. Or flatpack, which is easy but can bloat things I've been told. My biggest hurdle was on the audio side. I've just discovered that the PreSonus Quantums should work with Linux; they have Android/iOS compatibility on the site. I suppose I could boot a live USB and see if my HD 2 works. That and getting my head around all the different options, JACK, ALSA, etc. PreSonus has a Studio One Linux beta from December 2023; I don't think it's gone much past that, and it was missing a LOT of features from its Windows counterpart. Some people are already using Linux to make audio and don't know it >_> modern MPCs are running a bespoke OS based around Linux, I think Maschine+ is, too. The Isla S2400 just got a DSP card that's a Linux computer running LV2, CLAP, or VST plugins. yabridge. and.. carol? Sadly those don't work for some plugins, usually ones that require brand-installer programs (Arturia, Native Instruments, etc). But it's better than nothing.

    Ubuntu studio has been my go to for several years now. Lots of great plugins right out of the box. I was a little miffed at the recent switch to kde, but installing xfce back in doesnt take much effort. Im due to upgrade to 24.04, so im considering just keeping kde. For some reason ive always had stability issues with kde or it just didnt work right for my workflow, but i threw studio on my mess-around laptop and im definitely getting used to it. Anyone else have issues with kde? Or is it just me being a doofus?

You don't just blindly use the latest "flavour of the month" plugin, DAW or workflow because it's hip or has a fancy GUI. You use your technical knowledge and creativity to not be a slave to some corporation's new eye-candy. As a DSP programmer and lover of music (would not call myself a muso though), I can agree with you. It's all about the algorithm/s and what they do to the audio. I have heard and used open-source and/or free plugins that rival the fancy paid for ones. The GUI is nothing more than fancy packaging that just eats up CPU cycles and contributes nothing to the audio. "In the mix, no one can see your interface". 🤣

Sometimes I need to put them in place using only 1 volume % (my global settings is 85 on Linux for all apps). Because I'm using AKG K550, so it's very neutral, and your sound matched these headphones perfectly. The sound is perfect, warm, not squeaky, not too loud. note: you don't need to copy the iso files to the ventoy host usb drive, you can access your computer's local drive through it, it also makes for a much faster connection since the typical slow usb flash drive speed is not even comparable to a sata or nvme connection. of course this would be impractical if you plan to format the whole drive the isos are located on, but it's perfect for livecd mode. there might be a way to add persistent storage for each of their livecd modes as well. i have been looking for a way to boot directly into ventoy without the need for an external drive for some time now.

      Having done a little bit of music production with Android, I can tell you that you're going to get higher latency than you would on Linux or Windows most likely. Other than that, the same devices I've gotten to work with Linux seem to work with Android no problem. I think it's more a question of the software you'd like to use and if there is Android software available for the types of music you'd like to create. I personally really like using SunVox, since it runs on both Linux and Android, and loads no external DLL's. It makes producing music across all my devices quite seamless.

      Huh, I thought it was pretty clear the video was 10 minutes of me talking about "Why I Use Linux for Audio Production". If that's not what you were looking for, maybe pick a video with a different title.

    • @leepshin
      @leepshin 17 днів тому

      @LinuxCreative Nope it wasn't clear. The waters of Linux are still just as muddy as ever bud. I specifically clicked on your video hoping someone had cracked it especially with the hundreds of distros out there. It's infuriating especially as the Linux community is very unhelpful towards creatives like us.

      @@leepshin hoping to help change that, but I'm only one person with many other time obligations at the moment. Anything specific that's frustrating to you I can help clarify in future videos?

    The problem is hardware. There are only be about a dozen audio interfaces that have truly working linux drivers, and most of those seem to be class-compliant 2-channel behringer interfaces. There doesn't seem to be a modern, reliable way to get a lot of outboard equipment into a linux workstation. If it weren't for that, I'd be running linux on all of my machines. It just isn't workable for a professional studio unless you're doing almost everything in the box. I wish that weren't the case.

      @LinuxCreative 17 днів тому

      There are several Linux users running more than 2 channels, various PCIe, USB cards with way more features than the 3 MOTU boxes I'm currently running (all but one are more than 2 channels...). If you can get the same sample rate, channels, audio signals, and latency without a proprietary piece of software, what's the issue? I don't understand why this keeps coming up in this comment section. It's simply not true.

    It's too bad that I can't hear this video because I screwed up pulseaudio trying to configure JACK

    What I love with Audio production/music creation and Linux, is that you can absolutely decide what resources should be dedicated to that, and not to just populate your system memory to just hang around, lingering, doing F.all! I know several ppl that work as experts in configuring windows so that it solely are customised to Audio production. Removing services and tweaking processes, modifying registry, so that all resources goes to the Audio production. It's close to not necessary on *nix

    • @LinuxCreative
      @LinuxCreative 21 день тому

      This is absolutely true. Linux gives you the freedom to add or remove whatever you'd like to do whatever task you'd like.

    Cudos for getting it to work. Linux is not an catch-all thing. It works very very well when you set it up to do one thing for one computer. Hsve done the same a few times. It's still a hasle, but it works ok.

      @@LinuxCreative Thank you, I just tried it. The blend setup is really nice as you have it, very workable. The only problem is that Blender doesn't playback properly. On my laptop, the 1080p h.264 8bit file plays back at 3 fps. The file plays back properly (even without hardware acceleration) on Openshot, Shotcut and Kdenlive.

      I believe blender requires that you enable proxies and memory limits / prefetching frames instead of providing reasonable defaults. I believe these are all available in preferences, but can't quite remember and I'm away from my computer.

    Best linux for audio production in my experience: 1. Debian 12 KDE or LXQT with cadence, jackd2 and Pulse audio install kxstudio meta packages for faster setup and wineasio from same kxstudio repo, the good thing about cadence is that you can set wine asio settings from there.. 2. UbuntuStudio 24.04 pipewire 3. Endevor OS (arch linux) kde plasma or lxqt version with latest pipewire. (I find AvLinux buggy or maybe its me who dont like that desktop environment.. rather recommend stock debian 12 to begin audio setup from there)

    Focusrite 3rd gen support Linux well with native alsa Scarlett gui software and the builtin kernel sound-usb modules. in later than Linux 6.7 works plug and play. See a bright future for Linux audio because booth presonus and bitwig are natively available now and REAPER supports Linux on Intel and ARM architectures. And the development of PipeWire continues while yabridge works great with wine staging on Debian 12 for Windows vst plugins.. :-) (as of now the traditional jackd2 setup is more stable, but pipewire is not far away).. (the most stable way for lowlatency audio in Linux is using cadence and jackd with pulseaudio and wineasio for Windows programs..) this i just a summary of what I have learned in the "Linux world".. ;-) I find your videos interesting..🙂
